ANN FINDLATER - Celaeno - Feb 1872
Ann(e) FINDLATER was born on 15th February 1842 at the Mill of Auchinbady in Alvah, Banffshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of John FINDLATER and Sophia PORTER.
She is shown as still living with her parents at the Mill of Auchinbady in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census' and she sailed from London on 2nd November 1871 aboard the Celaeno and landed in Wellington on 2nd February 1872. The transcript of the ships manifest does not record her occupation but does mention that she is bound for Hawkes Bay.
Once in Napier she then married Alexander ROBB on 29th February 1872 @ St Pauls church in Napier. I assume that there was some contact between Ann & Alexander prior to her decision to emigrate. Alexander came out to New Zealand in 1862 with his parents and two sisters and went on to co-found the firm of Corskie and Robb in Waipawa, Hawkes Bay. Alexander was a prominent & stalwart member of the community helping to found the Waipawa Racing Club and the Waipawa Athletics Club. He was also a committee member of the District School Board as well as a member of the local branch of the Independent Order of Oddfellows.
Ann & Alexander went on to have six children;
- James (born 1873 :died 31st March 1881)
- Sophia Jessie (born 1874 :died 27th April 1875)
- Alexander (born 1875 :died 9th October 1963). Alexander married Catherine Mary CHASE in 1902. Alexander and Catherine Mary had at least four children, Annie Margaret (b:1904), Alexander James (b:1906), Francis Gordon (b:1907) and Catherine Mary (b:1911).
- John Findlater (born 1877 :died 29th September 1918 of wounds received whilst on active service in France). He is buried in Grevillers British Cemetery in France. John was still single when he died.
- William (born 4th March 1879 :died 19th April 1882)
- Henry Porter (born 2nd March 1881 :died 24th June 1954). Henry married Amy Catherine PARKER in 1905. Henry and Amy had at least one child, Stephen Henry (b:1906).
Ann died on 1st August 1928 but she was predeceased by Alexander who died on 18th February 1885 aged 47 years leaving Ann with three sons less than 10 years old.
Both Ann & Alexander plus their children (with the exception of Sophia & John Findlater) are buried in Waipawa cemetery. Sophia is buried in St Peters Churchyard, Waipawa and John Findlater in France as noted above.
