ALEXANDER FINDLATER - Zealandia - 1862

This could be one of the shortest of the individual pages, as we know very little about this Alexander FINDLATER from the time he lands in New Zealand.

Alexander FINDLATER was born on 20th June 1836 in Kirkcolm, Wigtonshire, Scotland. He was the third of thirteen children born to Thomas FINDLATER (from Ireland) and Elizabeth CLURG (or MCCLURG).

In the 1841 census he is living with his parents at South Cairn, Kirkcolm.

In the 1851 census he is an "Errand Boy" with the Kennedy famile at South Cairn Farm House, Kirkcolm and,

In the 1861 census he is an "Agricultural Labourer", still with the Kennedy family. His younger brother, Samuel Kennedy FINDLATER (14 yrs old), is also working as an Agricultural Labourer in the same household.

Alexander sailed from London on 4th Feb 1862 aboard the Zealandia and landed in Lyttelton on 23rd May 1862. On the ships passenger manifest he is described as a "Ploughman".

From the moment of his landing in Lyttelton there is no further record of him. There is no marriage or death records nor any comments about him in any of the old papers. He just disappears. I have even checked to see if he went back to the UK but there is no trace of him.

If he did have a family and there are any descendants, I would love to hear from you.
