CHRISTINA McINTOSH nee FINDLATER - Unknown - 1867

Christina FINDLATER was born on 6th May 1828 in Durness, Sutherland, Scotland. She was the sixth of the eight children of the Rev William FINDLATER and Mary THOMSON. In 1858 Christina married the Rev JOSHUA McINTOSH in Durness.

Christina and Joshua, along with the first five of their seven children (the other two were born in New Zealand), sailed out to New Zealand in the latter part of 1867, although the actual ship and date have yet to be established. We know that Joshua is introduced to the Lyttelton Presbytery in Christchurch on 8th January 1868. It is noted that he is recently arrived.

The Rev Joshua McINTOSH had a number of posts after this. He is inducted into the Greymouth (West Coast) Presbytery in 1873, Sefton (Canterbury) in 1877, St Andrews, Otaio in 1881, Within the Bounds Christchurch in 1884 and finally Stratford, Taranaki in 1890 where he stayed until his death on 20th July 1894. He is buried in the Te Henui cemetery in Stratford.

Christina outlasted her husband and died in New Plymouth, Taranaki in 1913. She is also buried in the Te Henui cemetery although the cemetery record has her called C. Finland McINTOSH.

Of their children;

  1. Kennethina Mary Findlater (b: 15th August 1859 and d: 13th April 1904). She was born in Knockando, Moray, Scotland and died in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. In 1889 she married Irwin FARIS. There were two children from that marriage. Kennethina is also buried n the Te Henui cemetery.
  2. Joanna Clarke (b: abt 1860 and d: 24th March 1900). She was born in Knockando, Moray, Scotland and died in Christchurch, New Zealand. On 25th December 1878 Joanna married Thomas Playsted McCLATCHIE They went on to have eight children. Joanna died on 23rd March 1908 and is buried in Addington cemetery in Christchurch, New Zealand. Thomas died on 25th May 1932 and is also buried in Addington cemetery.
  3. Alexander James (b: 18th September 1861 and d: 8th June 1912). He was born in Knockando, Moray, Scotland and died in Strandon, Taranaki, New Zealand. He is also buried in Te Henui cemetery. On 30th December 1895 he married Mary Ann McCLATCHIE. They had at least one child.
  4. Mary Fairlie Thomson (b: 20th April 1863 and d: 24th August 1926). She was born in Knockando, Moray, Scotland and died in Suva, on the island of Fiji. Mary had a son born out of wedlock in 1884 (the father was Maurice McSheehy GENTLEMUN). Mary then married Daniel McKIRDY in 1888. After Daniel's death in 1900 she married again, to William BORTHWICK on 1st April 1902 in Auckland. Neither of these marriages seem to have resulted in any children.
  5. William Robert Findlater (b: 22nd August 1865 and d: 30th July 1894). He was born in Knockando, Moray, Scotland and died in Stratford, Taranaki, New Zealand. He was unmarried at the time of his death. He is buried in Te Henui cemetery.
  6. Joshua Ronald (b: 21st September 1868 and d: 29th August 1895). Joshua was born in Lyttelton, Christchurch, New Zealand and died in Manaia, Taranaki, New Zealand. Joshua Ronald was unmarried at the time of his death and he is buried in the Pioneer cemetery, Stratford.
  7. Martinette Percy Whitworth (b: 12th March 1870 and d: 8th September 1906). This lady was actually registered twice, the second time as Martina Whitworth. However she prefered to be known as Patti. She was born in Lyttelton and died in Stratford, Taranaki, New Zealand. She is buried in the Pioneer cemetery in Stratford. On 5th February 1900 she married James White HARDING. There was a single daughter from this union. James remarried in 1911 to Violet Stanilaus HUNT and there are at least four children to this marriage.
