THE FINDLATERS FROM ECHT - PART 2
ANNE GORDON FINDLATER - HORORATA - 1925
Anne Gordon Findlater was born on 5th April 1900 in Echt, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She was the third of the six children of William FINDLATER (from Forglen, Banffshire, Scotland) and Mary Gerrie KINGHORN from Echt.
Anne married Alexander DOW on 13th July 1921 in the Northern Hotel, Kiltybrewster, Aberdeen, Scotland.
Anne & Alexander had three children in Scotland, Mary (born 1922), Anne (born 1923) and Alexander (born 1924). A further five children, John (born 1925), Lorna May (born 1927), Kenneth William (born 1930), Private(m) and Private(f) were born in New Zealand.
Anne and her family sailed from Southampton, England on 16th July 1925 aboard the SS Hororata and landed in Wellington on 21st August 1925. On the ship's passenger manifest Alexander is described as a "Labourer".
They soon made their home in Macandrew Bay in St. Kilda, Dunedin which is where they stayed for the rest of their lives.
On the electoral rolls after their arrival Alexander is usually described as a "Surfaceman". Alexander died on 21st August 1984 and he is buried in Macandrew Bay Cemetery in Dunedin, New Zealand. Anne had predeceased him on 2nd May 1975 and she is also buried in Macandrew Bay Cemetery.
Of their children:
Mary DOW married Peter McBey JOSS in 1944. This couple had at least two children. Mary died on 11th December 1960 and her husband on 4th June 1961. Both are buried in Macandrew Bay Cemetery.
Anne DOW married Cecil Ernest BELL in 1946. There are three sons to this marriage. Cecil died on 19th July 1998 and his ashes are buried in Macandrew Bay cemetery. I still need to confirm Anne's details.
Alexander DOW married Betty Grace Lavinia McLEAN in 1951. I believe there is just the one daughter. Alexander became a butcher by trade and died on 20th February 2007 and is buried in Anderson's Bay cemetery in Dunedin. I think Betty predeceased him in 2004.
John DOW married Lorna Jean RENNIE in 1951. There are two children to this marriage. John also became a butcher by trade. John died on 15th May 2006 and his ashes are buried at Macandrew Bay cemetery. Lorna Jean predeceased him on 20th June 2004 but her ashes are buried in Anderson's Bay cemetery in Dunedin.
Lorna May DOW married Stewart McDonald FUSSELL in 1953. This couple had at least four children. Lorna died in Christchurch, New Zealand on 6th March 1992 and her husband died at the same address on 8th July 1995. The ashes of both are buried in Macandrew Bay cemetery.
Kenneth William DOW died on 3rd December 1935 at the age of 5 years. He is buried in the same grave as his parents.
Private DOW married Private sometime between 1966 & 1969.
